Breeding Praying Mantis

When you have plans of breeding praying mantis, you should know how to distinguish the females from the males, among other praying mantis facts. One of the easiest ways to do this is by counting the segments at their abdominal region. Female mantises have six segments while males have eight.

Keeping the mantises healthy isn’t much of a work. When you got hold of a pair, you must first feed them properly with insects for about two weeks prior to breeding them. Failure to feed these insects well can lead to the other eating its mate rather than actually mating. Getting the proper breeding tank is also important and the only recommended one is a diagonal corkboard. When the pair is properly fed for two weeks, place them together in the breeding tank.

Watch them closely and observe because the female can get aggressive on the male. When this happens, remove the male right away before the female feeds on him. If they mate, you can expect hundreds of eggs to be laid by the female. However, the male is still in danger because the female has a behavior to try to eat the male after they mate.
